Day 74: Beginning

If you’ve ever taken a yoga class with me, I’ve probably shared this quote with you. More than once.

It’s so simple and straightforward, yet so hard to implement sometimes. It’s one of my favorites.

“We begin where we are and how we are, and whatever happens, happens.”
– T.K.V. Desikachar, The Heart of Yoga

It’s an open invitation to all of us to approach every single moment of our lives from our present states, without judgment. We move from wherever we start (and we get to choose if the direction of our movement is positive or negative). We don’t have to wake up each day focused on yesterday or anxious about tomorrow, because we can only begin from where we are and how we are in the current moment.

We are always beginning.

Day 71: More wishes

Just a couple more wishes on this important day in American history.

May you always appreciate quality time spent with good friends, no matter what the activity.

May you miss the big game one year in order to go see some really good live art (just consider it).

And may you get a really good night’s sleep tonight.

Day 70: Wishes

On this Saturday evening, I have some wishes for you:

May you always have a warm heart, even when it’s colder outside than the inside of your freezer.

May you have a good relationship with your family, because they will be your lifelong champions (they will also tell you when you have food in your teeth).

May you treat yourself with respect.

May you break a few things and either put them back together or let them rest.

May you laugh until you’re miserable in just the right way (stomach ache, tears, whatever you just drank coming out of your nose, etc.).

And finally, may you dance and dance and not feel the least bit self-concious about your body or your style. Your dancing is the best dancing.

Day 69: Awesome

This has been circulating the world wide web lately and I wouldn’t feel like a good digital citizen if I didn’t share it. You’ll love it.

“Get a better dream, then keep going. Keep going, keep going and keep going.”

“We were made to be awesome.”

Day 68: Things About 30

Even though they say 30 is the new 20 (or 25… or 27? I’m always a little unsure when “they” say things), 30 is way better than all of those ages. I’ve been 30 for almost four weeks now and here’s what I’ve learned so far:

1. Knowing what you want and knowing how you want to live are different (and not equal) concepts. In my 20s, I felt guilty for not having any major career goals. It took me 30 years to realize that the how is more important than the what. No matter what I do during my life, if I strive to keep learning, smile often, work hard, and be compassionate and thoughtful, I’ll always be on the right path (cue the forest animals singing together in sweet harmony).

2. Wearing lots of sunscreen in your twenties pays off when you’re 30. It just does.

3. Mostly, being 30 feels awesome. You can look back at the decisions you made when you were 21 (which seemed like great ones at the time) and know that you’d make entirely different ones now. You’re smarter, you have more confidence and frankly, you’re just a little more tired.

4. Your friends will be in every possible stage of life. Some will be traveling the world with backpacks. Some will be pregnant. Some will have multiple children and will be the best parents ever. Some will be exhausted. Some will be vice presidents and CEOs of the successful businesses they started. Some will be starting over. Some will long for the good old days. Some will own houses and cabins. Some will still panic at the thought of committing to one place or one person. Some will be engaged. Some will be divorced. And some will be just starting to feel comfortable in their own skin. It’s amazing.

I’m looking forward to the rest of the year.
