Day 85: Girl Scout Cookies

As a continuation to the continuation about happy things Midwesterners can think about while they wait for spring, this is the perfect time to post about Girl Scout cookies. In central/southern Minnesota and western Wisconsin, it’s currently cookie season (as if you didn’t know). 

I bought cookies yesterday from a lovely young woman in her last year of Girl Scouting. As she stood outside the grocery store in downright bitterly cold weather, she cheerily told me how much she’ll miss the program when she graduates, and that my Thin Mints were lovingly “pre-frozen.” She then explained to the gentleman behind me why cookies cost more this year and what she plans to do with the money she earns (a trip to France with her troop). She was smart, articulate, outgoing and a good saleswoman (“You know, a couple of packages of Trefoils would be very tasty with those Samoas.”).

If you’re wondering whether or not you should support Girl Scouts by buying cookies, the answer is yes. The girls in green sashes and brown vests are doing more than peddling delicious goods; they’re learning how to be leaders.

Day 84: Febsgiving

To continue yesterday’s post about happy things Midwesterners can think about during the next million years (six weeks) of winter, I’d like to recommend Febsgiving.

Febsgiving is exactly what it sounds like: Thanksgiving in February. By the time February rolls around, most of the good winter holidays are over (excluding President’s Day, of course). So, getting a group of good friends and/or family together for a delicious meal, lots of wine and an arsenal of funny YouTube videos is the perfect way to cure the winter blues.

Here are some reasons why Febsgiving is wonderful:

  • No one expects you to be anywhere for most of February, so there are no turkey tradition scheduling conflicts. Just pick a day and invite the funniest and nicest people you know.
  • You can screw it up and no one cares. Forgot the cranberries? No problem. Never defrosted the turkey? Womp womp. Maybe your new Febsgiving tradition is peanuts and SpaghettiOs. It’s still a special day.
  • You can start looking forward to it as soon as the ball drops on January 1.
  • Once you have more than one Febsgiving, it’s officially an annual event, so you can look back on Febsgivings past and reminisce. Remember when Uncle Andy took his shirt off and danced to every song by Death Cab for Cutie? That was an awesome Febsgiving.
  • It’ll give you the same warm fuzzies you get from all the other lovely winter holidays.
  • Pie.

Day 72: Bean Day

I’ve been eating a lot of chili lately. A non-comprehensive list of people as beans was inevitable. Here she is:

Black Bean. Everybody knows and loves you. You’re humble and unpretentious, but you can be the life of the party in a pinch. You experimented with veganism in college, but you quit when you realized you couldn’t eat real cheese. You love cheese.

Kidney Bean. Depending on the day, you either look classy or glassy and gross. But even on your gross days, you’re very fit. While you’re not an exercise fanatic, you have a consistent cardio workout schedule and enjoy a good detoxification diet. You manage your blood pressure well.

Soybean. You’re well traveled, versatile and have dabbled in multiple different lines of work. People tend to either love you or hate you, and you’re generally successful with your ventures. You don’t like cold weather. And although you’d never admit to it, you secretly think you’re the best bean.

Garbanzo Bean. You’re a little wacky. Deeming yourself indestructible, you once jumped off the roof of a two-story building with a parachute made out of kale. Most things are funny to you and you are funny to most people. You come from a huge family.

Black-Eyed Pea. A born bean, you legally changed your last name to “Pea” on your 18th birthday, but you regretted the decision immensely when “Elephunk” came out in 2004. Even though you seem a little bitter, people see your softer side and generally like being around you.


Day 14: Food Play

There are three good reasons for the following post:

1. It seemed apt to follow a post about the nature of good art with a picture of good edible art.

2. It’s Saturday.

3. Since I’m not yet on Instagram, I have to occasionally share photos elsewhere (because what else would I do with my photos?). Back in November, a fake Chris Rock (who I thought was the real Chris Rock, but the account has since been disabled) Tweeted this:
